Ultratrail Running Regulations
The sporting event is called ‘Tuscany Crossing’ and will be competitive in nature.
The race is organised by ASD SIENARUNNERS, an amateur sports association. The ‘TC’ takes place in southern Tuscany, in the Val d'Orcia Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
The races:
• The 100-mile race starts at 5 p.m. on Friday 17 April 2026 from Castiglione d'Orcia.
Runners must reach the finish line within 34 hours to receive a finisher's prize.
• The 103 km race starts at 5 a.m. on Saturday 18 April 2026 from Castiglione d'Orcia.
Runners must reach the finish line within 22 hours to receive a finisher's prize.
• The 53 km race starts at 7:00 am on Saturday 18 April 2026 from Castiglione d'Orcia.
Runners must reach the finish line within 10 hours to receive a finisher's prize.
-
The 15 km race starts at 9:00 am on Saturday 18 April 2026. Runners must reach the finish line within 2 hours to receive a finisher's prize. All participants must strictly adhere to the rules and pre-race briefing to remain eligible for the prize. The race route will be mostly through typical Tuscan landscapes, with most of the route on dirt roads, trails and asphalt (less than 20%), passing through some of the most beautiful villages in Tuscany.
Registration requirements
Athletes who are at least 18 years old and have a medical certificate for competitive sports, valid until at least 19 April 2026, can register. Athletes who are serving doping bans will not be accepted. No qualifying races are required for registration, but it is recommended that you have participated in other long trail races.
Athletes must acknowledge the length and particularities of the race, which differs substantially from other races, and be aware that participation requires a high level of physical preparation necessary to overcome situations that demand great physical and psychological autonomy, because the seemingly gentle Tuscan hills, although beautiful, are unforgiving in their challenge and unforgiving to the ill-prepared.
All participants must have a valid medical certificate for competitive athletics, which must be sent by email or handed in directly when collecting the race number. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of registration without any right to a refund of the fee paid.
Registration
Registration will open on 1 July 2024 and close on 1 April 2025.
Maximum number of participants for each distance
250 participants for the 100-mile race
300 participants for the 103 km race
500 participants for the 53 km race
300 participants for the 14 km race
for each distance, but the organisers reserve the right to increase the number of registrations for each distance or close registrations when a maximum of 1,500 total registrations is reached.

In the event of cancellation of the race due to force majeure, up to 10 days before the event, the Organisation reserves the right to refund 50% of the registration fee paid or to transfer the registration to the next date set by the Organising Committee. weather conditions or for any other reason beyond the control of the Organisation, no refund will be due to participants.
How to register
Online by following the instructions on the website www.tuscanycrossing.com
Liability
The athlete releases the organisation from any liability for medical problems that may occur before, during and after the race, as they have been informed of any medical contraindications that may affect them.
In the event that it is necessary to call 118, including the possible use of a helicopter, any expenses incurred for the intervention of structures external to those of the organisation, both before, during and after the event, cannot be charged to the organisation itself.
The athlete participates in the event at their own risk, relieving the organising company of any liability for damage caused to or suffered by persons, animals or property before, during and after the event.
Familiarity
Knowledge of the route offers physical and mental advantages during the race, so take care to study the difficulties well. Particular attention should be paid to those sections that you expect to run in the dark, when your mental and physical energy may be low.
Night running
In races where a significant part of the run will take place at night, in addition to the mandatory light, it is advisable to have a second light and spare batteries. If your lights fail, wait for another runner with a light.
Weather
As temperatures during the race can vary from 0° to 30° degrees, participants must be prepared for both extremes. Weather conditions are unpredictable and can change rapidly.
River crossing
Along the route, runners will have to wade through rivers and streams. Wading is dangerous and MUST NOT BE ATTEMPTED DURING THE RACE. On the day of the race, a guide rope will be stretched across the river, with staff available to assist.
Signage
Course markings will consist of tape, arrows and other signs that will be communicated before the start. In addition, reflectors will be placed on the course for the hours of darkness. The staff will do their best to provide a well-marked course, but runners must remain alert at all times while competing. Occasionally, people not associated with the event may alter or remove signs. A working knowledge of the course, the road book and the GPS track will be of infinite help to runners.
Change bags
Race management will provide transport for change bags to the locations specified on the Map. This service is provided to help runners without support. Those with adequate support are asked not to overload our volunteers with unnecessary bags. Bags must be securely tied, clearly labelled with your number and deposited at the appropriate collection station established for each checkpoint before departure. Change bags must fit through a 40 cm opening. You are limited to one bag per aid station. Please do not use paper bags, shoe boxes or anything made of paper-like products. These can easily get wet. It is imperative that runners do not leave perishable items in their bags. Do NOT put glass bottles in change bags. Bags will be returned to the TUSCANY centre as soon as possible. It is the responsibility of each runner to claim their own bags. If you are unable to retrieve your bags, please ask someone else to do so for you. Collection bags must be claimed by 10:00 on Sunday. Any bags left after the event may be disposed of. DO NOT leave any valuables in your bags. The Organising Committee is not responsible for lost or damaged collection bags and their contents.
Withdrawal
If you have to abandon the race at a point where rescue is not available, we will make every reasonable effort to take you to the finish line or the nearest main checkpoint still in operation, especially if you require medical attention. In non-emergency situations, you may have to wait several hours before being evacuated. Runners who have to leave the race will be taken to the finish line. Our primary responsibility is to put on a race, not to provide a shuttle service for non-finishers; therefore, please be patient. Rescue stations will close when the sweep service arrives.
Race ethics
Please be courteous to hikers, tourists and motorists. The course will not be closed to traffic and runners must obey the highway code. Volunteers on the course will not have the power to stop cars.
Volunteers: Over 300 dedicated volunteers help with this race. They are truly the lifeblood of the race and will do everything they can to make your day a success. Many spend more hours on the course than the runners themselves. Please be polite and remember to thank them. Without volunteers, there would be no races like the TUSCANY CROSSING.
Insurance
Civil liability: The organisation takes out civil liability insurance for the entire duration of the event. The organisation recommends that all participants take out their own personal insurance covering participation in events such as Tuscany Crossing, including accident, travel and evacuation costs.
Image rights
By registering for the TC, athletes expressly authorise the organisation to acquire, free of charge, together with its partners, to use still or moving images in which they may appear, taken during their participation in the event, on all visual media as well as on promotional and/or advertising materials, produced and distributed worldwide and for the maximum time permitted by the laws, regulations and treaties in force, including any extension that may be made to the period providedfor.
Acceptance
By registering and paying the fee, the participant accepts these rules without reservation.
TC rules
The purpose of these rules is to ensure the fairness of the race and individual performances, providing equal conditions for all. The guiding principles of the rules are simple: run fairly, run safely and respect the environment.
Violations of any TC rule or directive may result in disqualification for one or more years, or other penalties such as time penalties, fines and/or disqualification from prizes.
Each runner's official race number must be worn visibly on the front of the body and must be easily visible at all times.
Runners must follow the marked trail at all times. Any runner who leaves the official course must return to the point of exit on foot before continuing.
Each runner must complete the entire course without outside assistance. No physical or mechanical aids are allowed, except for trekking poles.
No assistance may be provided outside the designated areas (refreshment area) except in the case of medical assistance.
Runners must comply with the race rules and regulations issued by the Race Director in the pre-race emails and at the pre-race briefing on Friday afternoon, or they will be disqualified. Each runner must be registered or checked at all checkpoints.
All time limits will be strictly enforced. Runners must be OUTSIDE the checkpoint BEFORE the time limit. Runners who return to the checkpoint after the time limit will be eliminated from the race.
At the discretion of the medical staff, further monitoring of individual runners may be necessary.
Refusal by the runner to cooperate fully may result in immediate disqualification. Each runner must fully disclose to the medical staff at the pre-race check-in any changes in existing medical conditions and all prescribed medications.
Medical/health personnel may, at their sole discretion, suspend a participant from the race by invalidating their race number. Rescuers are authorised to evacuate participants deemed to be in danger by any means at their disposal. The use of anti-inflammatory injections by medical personnel on duty is not permitted. If the use of anti-inflammatory injections is necessary, the
competitor will be stopped and transported to the medical station for health checks. Runners must refrain from any act of unsportsmanlike conduct.
Smoking is not permitted at any of the checkpoints or along the route.
Any runner who is unable to complete the race must personally inform the nearest rescue station or checkpoint of their decision to withdraw. The runner must hand in their GPS tracker and race number at that time. This serves as official notification of a runner's withdrawal from the race. Runners who abandon the course without handing in their tracker and race number will be classified as “lost”, potentially activating the search and rescue unit. The time spent searching for such a runner may be charged to the runner.
Runners who cross the finish line after the time limit will not be listed as official finishers. The TC has a zero-tolerance policy regarding the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). Any athlete who has been determined to have violated anti-doping rules or policies enforced by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF),
the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) or any other national sports federation, is not eligible to register for the TC. Any athlete who refuses to undergo anti-doping testing, if selected for testing, shall be disqualified and subject to a lifetime ban from the TC.
In the event of bad weather conditions, weather alerts and for safety reasons, the organisation reserves the right to suspend the race in progress, change the time barriers or divert the race route onto paved sections.

Time Gates
- Time gates will be set up to allow competitors and a shuttle service so that competitors do not remain on the course without assistance. The time gates will be announced as soon as possible. For the races, they are calculated at 5 km per hour. After these times, no assistance will be guaranteed and competitors will be out of the race. (These are exit times.)
ENVIRONMENT
The race takes place in a nature park and fully protected ecosystems. Competitors must behave in an environmentally friendly manner, in particular avoiding littering, picking flowers or disturbing wildlife. Anyone found littering along the route will be disqualified from the race and will incur any penalties provided for by municipal regulations.
Each competitor must carry a cup or water bottle to fill at the refreshment points. The event is part of the campaign promoted by Spirito Trail “I don't litter”. REFRESHMENTS
The race is semi-self-sufficient with a minimum water supply of one litre.
Food and drinks from the refreshment points must be consumed on site; water bottles or Camel bags may only be filled with still water. At the start of each refreshment point, runners must have enough water and food to reach the next refreshment point.
There will be an additional refreshment point at the finish line.
There are several rivers, fountains and towns along the route where you can refill your water bottles.
Any food or drinks purchased in unauthorised places are at the competitor's expense.
COMPLAINTS
Violation of any of the TC rules or regulations is a very serious matter. Consequently, the alleged violation of a rule by another runner is very serious. Protests must be submitted by a registered operator and must be submitted using the following procedure:
Report the alleged violation to the runner as the incident occurs. Find a witness to the alleged violation, if possible.
Report the alleged violation with the runner's name and number to the next available rescue station judge.
Report the alleged violation in writing to the Race Director at the finish line.
All protests must be submitted by 10.30 a.m. on the Sunday following the race. The written protest must include the name of the person who filed the complaint.
Both parties will be invited to discuss the complaint with the Committee at noon on Sunday, when a decision will be made on whether to refuse the prize to the alleged violator.
In case of various oversights or omissions in the race regulations, the decision rests with the race director as well as the final judgement on all parties.
A final resolution of the issue may be taken by the UISP Territorial Committee approximately two
weeks after the race.
In the event of any oversights or omissions in the race regulations, the decision shall rest with the race director, who shall also have the final say on all matters.
The director of the race called “TUSCANY CROSSING” will be appointed by the Organising Committee and assisted by UISP judges.
