How was Tuscany Crossing born?
The idea for Tuscany Crossing was conceived in 2012 by two trail running organisers and enthusiasts, a discipline that was virtually unknown in Tuscany. Aurelio Michelangeli suggested to Roberto Amaddii, who had started organising events in the area, that they organise the first 100 km race in Tuscany, and what better place than Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. So the great challenge began. Roberto, who knew the area well, having been born and lived there, began to explore and map out the routes. The location was chosen as Castiglione d'Orcia, the central town of the Val d'Orcia, whose fortress would become the symbol of the race.

Our aim was to create an event for the area
Right from the start, there was a clear desire in Castiglione d'Orcia to create an important event. The organisation was almost family-based, but there was no lack of determination and passion.
The main objective is to create a sense of pride and belonging in the local community, promote awareness of local traditions and encourage a form of responsible sports tourism. An event that not only celebrates sport and trail running but also the unique cultural heritage of the area, and which can contribute to the growth of the local economy through the promotion of businesses and tourism.
It is an event that demonstrates how the passion of the people who live in an area can be transformed into an opportunity to share through sport and local culture, promoting the sustainable development of the area.
Roberto Amaddii's task has always been to find and coordinate people, groups and associations with a common goal: the desire to promote the Valdorcia, the area and local traditions through long-distance running.
Trail running offers the opportunity to explore beautiful natural environments, such as woods, mountains, hiking trails and breathtaking landscapes, and in Valdorcia, in the heart of Tuscany, it is easy to discover how rewarding it is to run in these settings.
Year after year, the organising committee has grown with enthusiasm and passion, and the core group formed by the community of Castiglione d'Orcia has expanded to include associations from neighbouring villages. Four municipalities are now involved and 14 villages are crossed, contributing with refreshments to the success of an event that has grown over time.
During these editions, the ideas have not stopped, new proposals from Roberto Amaddii have been endorsed by the whole area and new challenges have emerged, contributing to the growth of interest and participants.
Gravel Running: the new frontier of free running

Why is the Tuscany Crossing the iconic race for this discipline?

In recent years, we have been hearing more and more about gravel running, a new form of running that is winning over athletes and outdoor enthusiasts throughout Italy.
But what exactly is gravel running? And why has the Tuscany Crossing, in the heart of the Val d'Orcia, become the symbol of this new philosophy of movement?

What is gravel running?

The term gravel originated in the world of cycling, where it refers to bikes designed for riding on dirt roads, gravel tracks and natural trails.
Transferred to the world of running, the concept retains the same essence: running off the tarmac, on mixed terrain, where running meets adventure.
Gravel running is therefore freedom and discovery, a way to get back in touch with nature, to rediscover the pleasure of moving on authentic trails, far from traffic and noise.
It is not just a new sport, but a philosophy of running: slower, more mindful, more connected to places and emotions.
Dirt roads: the heart of gravel running
The magic of gravel running is all here: in the dirt roads that cross villages, hills and countryside, giving that unique feeling of travelling through time and space.
These are routes that combine tradition and nature, ideal for those seeking physical challenge but also the pleasure of the experience.
In Italy, the most iconic dirt roads are found in Tuscany — a region that has always embodied the essence of gravel. And it is here, among the hills and cypress trees of the Val d'Orcia, that the event that best represents this philosophy comes to life: the Tuscany Crossing.

Tuscany Crossing: the race that tells the story of Tuscany

Now in its 13th edition, the Tuscany Crossing has become a legend in the world of trail and ultrarunning.
But with the birth of Gravel Running, the event has also become the benchmark for the gravel movement in Italy.
Its route crosses the most evocative landscapes of the Val d'Orcia — from Castiglione d'Orcia to Pienza, from Montalcino to San Quirico — combining sport, nature and culture in a total experience.
Here, you don't just run for the stopwatch: you run to experience the real Tuscany, to breathe in the dust, to listen to your footsteps in the silence of the fields.
The Tuscany Crossing is not just any race.
It is a story written with your feet, an inner and collective journey at the same time.
That is why it has become the iconic gravel running race: because it embodies everything that this discipline represents — freedom, authenticity, discovery.

The future of gravel running

The success of gravel running is not a passing fad.
It is the response to a new way of experiencing sport, one that is more sustainable and more human.
More and more runners are choosing natural, less competitive and more experiential routes, where the value is not speed, but the journey.
And the Tuscany Crossing is ready to lead this evolution.
Because in Tuscany, on the white roads of the Val d'Orcia, every step tells a story, every race becomes a tale, every athlete writes their own adventure.
